Rowan Caney

Rowan Caney is a 3rd year student at UWE in Bristol. Even though hes only a student at the same stage as I am, his work is of a really high standard. He does lots of publications and I like his application of type - even his overuse of Akzidenz Grotesk.

Blanket Magazine

Some spreads from Blanket Magazine which is an online PDF based magazine that covers emerging artists and creatives. I like the designs and layout. Like most magazines they work on a DPS but because it is exclusively for PDF and not for print, they can ignore the margins meaning that full columns of text can fit down the middle of the spread.

Top 10 Publication Design Studios/Designers/Publications

This is a list of studios/designers whose work exemplifies what I consider to be 'good' publication design. I've had to leave out some of the ones who weren't English/American as I will contact all of these in an attempt to get some quotes for my Design Context. I think this list is a pretty comprehensive summary of what I what to do in my future career.

Top 10 Studios/Designers:

1. Public

2. Shaz Madani

3. Deep

4. D8

5. Purpose

6. Pentagram

7. Music

8. Sort Design

9. Hofstede Design

10. The Consult

Top 5 Publications:

1. Nylon Magazine

2. Station Magazine

3. No Zine

4. EFFP View Magazine

5. Dazed & Confused

Pick Me Up Scans

Some scans from the 22nd October 2009 issue of Pick Me Up:

These are a really good example of what I consider to be a poorly designed publication. Lots of bright clashing colours, unconsidered fonts, jauntily angled photographs of poor quality. Theres even a bit of Comic Sans in there, oh dear... This would be greatly improved if they considered the body copy a bit more. Its crammed into about 3 or 4 columns on each page and its such a great amount of text it makes you not want to read it. I think stock photography would also help. I know that the pictures of the people in the story help the reader to relate to it, but they're just such poor quality, like they've been taken on a camera phone. The design just isn't appropriate to the stories at all. I think if I take these things into consideration in the redesign, it could look a lot better.
